Nicolas Winding Refn’s long awaited “Only God Forgives”— his follow-up to 2011s “Drive”— hits theaters and VOD starting today (you can read our review here). He’s been hitting the press circuit drumming up attention for the Ryan Gosling-starring film and, as always, Refn delivers the goods in a one hour talk with the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
As part of Center’s free Summer Talks program, in which actors and filmmakers stop by discussions, Refn showed up to talk not only about the new film but a variety of topics including working cheaply and efficiently, using silence in film, his views on violence as the ultimate fantasy, how he ended up working with Gosling in the first place and his simple advice for aspiring filmmakers (which includes an anecdote about eating ice cream with Elia Kazan). As always, Refn is colorful conversationalist, proud of his films but also critical of his failures, and pretty candid overall.
Even though we’re a little cool on the new film itself, Refn still gives an informative and entertaining talk. So if you have an hour to spare check out the talk below (or some of the segments) and catch “Only God Forgives” in theatres or on VOD.
