Online fans are insatiable for news, and Marvel fans are particularly ravenous. The WGA writer’s strike has obviously delayed the entire Marvel and Disney schedule (see the domino effect here). However, fans are still asking about future projects, like what’s the state of “Spider-Man 4” and will Tom Holland return for it?
The answer is a definitive yes, and another trilogy might be in the cards. In a new THR profile about Holland’s Apple TV+ series, “The Crowded Room” (read our review here), the young actor shared that he had already met with Sony and Marvel and was armed with “a bunch of notes and ideas.” However, the Writer’s Strike started, and everyone is putting their pencils and ideas down in solidarity.
The good news is, it seems they have a purpose, a point, and a good idea for “Spider-Man 4,” which is obviously better than just making a sequel to make a sequel.
“It was myself, [Spider-Man producer] Amy [Pascal], [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige, [executive producer] Rachel [O’Connor], sometimes other executives from Marvel will sit in,” Holland explained. “It’s a collaborative process. The first few meetings were about, ‘Why would we do this again?’ And I think we found the reason why. I’m really, really happy with where we’re at in terms of the creative.”
Why would we even bother? Honestly, that’s the best interrogative way to start a sequel because a fourth film needs to justify its existence. And that said, Holland says he’s a little worried and anxious because he knows the blemished reputation many fourth films in a series have in Hollywood history.
“But I’m also a little apprehensive about it,” he continued. “There’s a bit of a stigma about the fourth one in all franchises. I feel like we hit a home run with our first franchise, and there’s a part of me that wants to walk away with my head held high and pass the baton to the next lucky kid that gets to bring this character to life.”
Clearly, he’s not about to walk away yet. But Holland is 27 now, can’t really play a teenager forever (or even a college-aged student), and don’t be surprised that via the multiverse shenanigans, Marvel and Sony are contemplating bringing in a new, young Spider-Man at some point. Amy Pascal recently admitted that they want to bring a live-action version of Miles Morales from the ‘Spider-Verse’ movies into Sony’s Spider-Verse, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe might welcome him with open arms, too, when the time is right.
