‘Unstoppable’ Trailer: Jharrel Jerome, Jennifer Lopez & More Star In An Underdog Sports Drama

If the name Jharrel Jerome sounds vaguely familiar, it should. The 27-year-old actor made his debut in Barry Jenkins‘ drama film “Moonlight” (2016), and his career has been on an upward trajectory ever since. Following that performance, he appeared in Ava DuVernay’s Netflix miniseries “When They See Us” (2019) and Boots Riley’s limited series “I’m a Virgo” (2023). The rising star’s next role is “Unstoppable,” an underdog sports drama that had its world premiere at the recent Toronto International Film Festival in September (read our review).

Sports biopics are only as good as their subjects, and “Unstoppable” has a doozy—Anthony Robles, who, despite being born with one leg, went on to win the 2011 NCAA national wrestling championship as a senior at Arizona State University in the 125-pound weight class. It is a remarkable story and now receives an extremely traditional, by-the-numbers big-screen movie treatment in “Unstoppable” that nevertheless boasts existing scenes of wrestling and a bevy of committed stars around lead Jharrel Jerome.

‘Unstoppable’: Jennifer Lopez To Star In Upcoming Sports Biopic From Artists Equity & Amazon

Artists Equity, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon‘s new banner, closes this year’s edition of SXSW in Austin with its first film, “Air,” a biopic about Nike co-founder Phil Knight and the birth of the Air Jordan shoe. But AE is in talks with Amazon about their second film before their first even premieres. Deadline reports that “Unstoppable,” a biopic about three-time All-American one-legged wrestler Anthony Robles, will be AE’s next film, and someone closely attached to Affleck may star.

Quentin Tarantino Says Tony Scott’s ‘Unstoppable’ Is One Of His Top 10 Films Of The Last Decade

Quentin Tarantino is an uber-cinephile. His love of films knows no bounds. Whether it’s classics, Westerns, samurai films, or horror flicks about alligators, the filmmaker is someone that is able to enjoy just about any type of film. And so, it almost makes sense, in a very Tarantino way, that he’d choose “Unstoppable” as one of the best films of the 2010s.

Recently, Quentin Tarantino sat with the folks over at The Ringer for three episodes of the podcast, “The Rewatchables.” And while we only know two of the three films he talked about (the third episode has yet to be released), both the first two films — “Dunkirk” and now, “Unstoppable” — rank in his top 10 of the decade.

New Photos: ‘127 Hours,’ ‘Love & Other Drugs,’ ‘Unstoppable,’ ‘The Next Three Days’ & More

Fall film previews have arrived and MTV has received a swarm of new images from various pictures being released between September and the end of the year.

Included, in order of most interesting to least interesting (at least in our estimation) is another shot of James Franco in Danny Boyle’s mountain expedition-gone-wrong drama, “127 Hours,” Anne Hathaway in Ed Zwick’s Viagra-based salesman rom-com “Love & Other Drugs,” and Zach Galifianakis and Keir Gilchrist in Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s psychiatry ward comedy, “It’s Kind of a Funny Story.”
Additionally there’s new photos of Russell Crowe in Paul Haggis’ thriller, “The Next Three Days” and Chris Pine in Tony Scott’s train-gone-amok actioner, “Unstoppable.”

Below, there’s a set photo of Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” with Vincent Cassel (of peak interest, but just a set photo) and Jack Black in “Gulliver’s Travels.”

MTV has additional photos of “The American,” “Welcome To The Rileys” (Kristen Stewart looking her most acne-ridden), Ryan Reynolds in “Buried,” Dwayne Johnson in “Faster,” plus a pretty hilarious shot of Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington who is apparently in “Saw 3D” (the still looks exactly the same as any of their videos).

Full Trailer For ‘Unstoppable’ Debuts: Tony Scott and Denzel Washington Sure Do Love Them Trains

With news coming in yesterday that Tony Scott was mulling over three possible projects for his next film, it seems as good a time as any to have a look at the one he’s currently finishing up. “Unstoppable” is a big budget thriller due this November, which, like Scott’s last film “The Taking of Pelham 123,” stars Denzel Washington as an ordinary schlub who has to deal with a crisis involving a train.

This time, Washington plays an experienced train engineer, who’s teamed with a rookie conductor (Chris Pine, in his first big role since “Star Trek”), but an ordinary day turns dramatic when an unmanned train full of toxic chemicals starts speeding down the tracks.

Tony Scott May Tackle John Grisham’s ‘The Associate’ With Shia LaBeouf; ‘Potzdamer Platz’ & ‘Hell’s Angels’ Still In The Mix

Considering the brace of them we saw in the 1990s, it’s sort of remarkable how long its been since we’ve seen a John Grisham adaptation. Between 1993’s “The Firm” and 2004’s “Christmas With The Kranks” (yes, bizarrely, that was from a Grisham novel, too), eleven adaptations of the lawyer-turned novelist’s work hit the big screen, sometimes to decent effect (“The Firm,” “Runaway Jury”), sometimes… not (“The Chamber”).

In fact, none of Grisham’s last fifteen books have reached the big screen, after the author became fed up with a lack of creative involvement, although a few of his works are being developed: “The Testament” was sold last year, while George Clooney held the rights to the true crime saga “An Innocent Man,” which David Gordon Green was briefly going to direct.

Hotness alert! Is this gonna be like, “The Full Monty,” only much more foul, odious and cinematically dyslexic? Tony Scott, the ADD, ritalin-deficient director behind filmic follies like “Domino” and “Deja Vu” has attached himself to direct a project based on the life of Steve Banerjee, the man who created the idea of male Chippendales strippers.

We know next to nothing about Banerjee’s life (suurrrrre we don’t), but according to Variety, his life was “consumed by excess and competition when the male strip clubs became a phenomenon in the 1980s.”

The Scott-Free production company of Tony and Ridley Scott is producing.

Chris Pine Is The New Jack Ryan?

Variety reports that Chris Pine, star of this summer’s “Star Trek,” is set to become Paramount’s bitch boy. He’s close to signing onto two new projects with the studio, most importantly a new offering in the Jack Ryan saga based on the books from Tom Clancy. Ryan’s been the focal point of four action movies so far, where the CIA “analyst” always found himself jumping from explosions, out of cars, onto terrorists, etc. The last effort, the post-9/11 “The Sum of All Fears” with Ben Affleck, made a shade under $200 million worldwide and even sparked talk of a John Woo-helmed “Rainbow Six” spinoff starring the John Clark character, but the studio was probably reticent to gamble on the then-toxic Affleck for a franchise and didn’t want the negative P.R.

Christopher Nolan has evidently exited the film adaptation of British television show “The Prisoners” that he was tapped to direct back in the summer of 2006. Producer Barry Mendel notes that “Nolan has dropped out of it but we have a first draft by David and Janet Peoples who wrote “Twelve Monkeys” and David wrote “Unforgiven” and it’s a good draft and we’re working on the script right now.” Hmm, could this be due to that certain sequel he might have on the horizon?

Charlize Theron’s Denver and Delilah Films has acquired screen rights to “Florence of Arabia,” Christopher Buckley’s satirical novel about a State Dept. employee, played by Theron, who fights for equal rights for the women in an Middle Eastern country after watching her friend marry its prince and then get executed. Theron will also produce. [Variety]

A live-action adaptation of manga “Akira” is reportedly a “real priority” and may “go before the third quarter of next year for a 2011 release.” Produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company, the adaptation is set for two features that will cover 3 volumes of the story about a governmental genetic project and a teenager’s attempt to save a fellow biker gang member.

With the recession giving movie executives a fake reason to start saying “no!” to people (the numbers are undeniable — box office receipts are well ahead of last year’s pace), we’re seeing a lot of musical chairs as projects start to slowly collapse into a heap of failed ambition, miscommunication, and misplaced ego. Sometimes this results in interesting fare like Steven Soderbergh’s “Moneyball” dying on the vine. More often that not, it deep-sixes troublesome projects that no one saw as a slam dunk in the first place.

We’re making an effort to avoid all corny puns here but Tony Scott’s upcoming project “Unstoppable” has been… held back over disagreements regarding the film’s budget. The film was set to shoot in the fall and has Denzel Washington and Chris Pine on board though reports are that the mediocre box office performance of Scott’s “The Taking Of Pelham 123” and the studio’s fear of potential wages for Washington, Scott and Pine have… hindered the project’s progress.

In a lengthy interview with Coming Soon, cinema villain Tony Scott spilled about all the projects he has in the pipeline. We’re just stunned he’s survived “Domino”- credit where credit’s due, if someone wanted to make the very last movie humanity would produce, “Domino” would be the sad, miserable end before the apocalypse. Some feel this makes that movie worth recommending. They are wrong. We commend Scott for not following that movie with an unhinged naked, drug-fueled sojourn into the woods where he’d live in a cave with M Night Shyamalan post-“Lady In The Water” to trade stories about the goblins in their heads.
