For many years, Hollywood has been trying to figure how to crack Tom Clancy‘s “Rainbow Six” for the big screen. Of course, the author has seen great success with his Jack Ryan character, so it’s only natural that studio executives want to exploit his other work. However, “Rainbow Six” has been very slow going. Many, many years ago, John Woo was attached to direct an adaptation, but it never went anywhere and things have been pretty quiet around the project since, but a new A-list star has reignited chatter.
Deadline reveals that Ryan Reynolds has been part of loose discussions to lead “Rainbow Six.” Now that the actor is back in the limelight thanks to the success of “Deadpool,” it’s not a big surprise, but it’s unclear if they want him to bring his sardonic approach to the material, or play it straight. Given that the script is coming from Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec — whose credits include “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” and “Beverly Hills Cop 4” — it can probably go in either direction at this point. And maybe these Tom Clancy movies could use some levity after years of straight faced, serious, Dad-approved versions.
Again, this is all very early, and “Rainbow Six” has been a pretty slow moving train, so who knows if and when it’ll ever happen. However, producer Akiva Goldsman hasn’t given up on it yet.
