Can a remake recreate the success of its predecessor? “Road House” became one of the ‘80s’ best-known action films thanks largely to its star, Patrick Swayze. Now, Jake Gyllenhaal is taking on the property with a reimagining of the cult classic. The current incarnation of “Road House” sees Gyllenhaal portrayed as a bouncer and former UFC fighter. A new job in the Florida Keys puts this heroic figure to the test.
A cast of notable names joins Gyllenhaal. Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim de Almeida, Conor McGregor, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, B.K. Cannon, Beau Knapp, Darren Barnet, and Dominique Columbus also star. McGregor brings authenticity to the project, having won several UFC championships.
“Road House” is set to premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival before arriving on Prime Video. Director Doug Liman expressed concern about the project’s streaming release. A written statement released last night addressed his concerns about missing out on a theatrical run. Liman claims the film has already seen interest from UFC fans, which has given the project 1.5 billion social media impressions. Nevertheless, “Road House” promises to be one of the festival’s hottest tickets and a surefire hit for Amazon.
The film’s official synopsis:
In this adrenaline-fueled reimagining of the 80s cult classic, ex-UFC fighter Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, only to discover that this paradise is not all it seems.
