American audiences already have their fair share of kaiju-related material with “Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters” premiering on Apple TV+ on November 17. And Adam Wingard‘s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” hits theaters next April, the latest movie in Legendary‘s MonsterVerse. But what about the original “Godzilla” franchise? Y’know, the long-running one that started it all?

Well, you’re in luck, kaiju fans: “Godzilla Minus One,” the 37th film in Toho Studios‘ franchise, hits theaters later this month. Takashi Yamazaki‘s movie already closed the Tokyo International Film Festival two days ago to a lot of buzz, so rest assured his take on the iconic kaiju will be worth it. And based on the film’s new trailer, this could be one of the best onscreen appearances of Godzilla ever.
Like most of these films, “Godzilla Minus One” features Godzilla showing up with a post-war Japan in dire straits, wreaking havoc as per usual. But Yamazaki’s Godzilla looks especially ferocious and destructive, making his film perhaps the most anticipated in the franchise in years. Maybe that’s because Yamazaki has had some practice with the kaiju: the CG animator and VFX artist previously utilized Godzilla in 2007’s “Always: Sunset On Third Street 2” and Seibu-en‘s “Godzilla The Ride” in 2021.
“Godzilla Minus One” stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
Yamazaki writes and directs the film, with Toho Studios and Robot as production studios. Minami Ichikawa, Kenji Yamada, Kazuaki Kishida, Gō Abe, and Keiichirō Moriya serves as producers on “Godzilla Minus One.”
After a special screening in LA next week, “Godzilla Minus One” hits US theaters in December. Stay tuned for an exact theatrical release date. In the meantime, watch the new trailer for the film below.
