Cameras are now rolling on Christopher Nolan‘s “Dunkirk,” his take on a WWII movie. The picture has already raised eyebrows thanks to its somewhat random casting that sees newcomer Fionn Whitehead, One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles, and Tom Hardy all on the same call sheet. But if these first set images are any indication, the scale of Nolan’s picture is going to be quite something.
Photographer Pierre Volot has taken the first snaps that range from sandbagged streets to larger landscapes, providing an interesting tease of what the director is cooking up. The film is inspired by Operation Dynamo, the near-miraculous evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and other Allied troops from the French seaport of Dunkirk, which took place from May-June of 1940. Helping to commit that to 65mm and IMAX 65mm, is cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (who worked on Nolan’s previous effort, “Interstellar“).
Also featuring Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh, “Dunkirk” opens on July 21, 2017. Check out the images below.
