Is the “Marvel Wobble”—the terms the MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios book writers have coined for Marvel’s very mixed 2023—turning into the Marvel Buckle? Is this week the make-or-break week for Marvel in 2023? Because some reports suggest that the upcoming “The Marvels” is tracking to less than DC’s disastrous “The Flash” and “Black Adam.” This would be a devastating narrative for Marvel and would be their lowest-opening film in years, even worse than the figures posted by movies like “Eternals” in the heart of the pandemic.
Keeping that all in mind, in one final marketing push, Marvel Studios debuted the final trailer for “The Marvels” during ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” game, simulcast on ABC, ESPN2, and ESPN Deportes last night. The new trailer looks back on the Avenger’s battle against Thanos, dropping in some nostalgia for that era, and then looks ahead to this new adventure where Captain Marvel and her team as they go up against a formidable enemy (also look for a new cameo in the trailer from another member of the MCU, hint, she’s connected to the film’s director Nia DaCosta (“Little Woods”).
In case you’re living under a rock, you probably already know that “The Marvels” stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau from “WandaVision,” and Iman Vellani from “Ms. Marvel.”
The supporting cast includes Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Seo-Jun Park, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson. Nia DaCosta (the “Candyman” reboot) directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos, and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by DaCosta Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik.
Here’s the official synopsis:
