As seen in the trailer for “Donyale Luna: Supermodel,” the upcoming HBO documentary tells the story of Donyale Luna, the first Black woman to be featured on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. She rose to prominence in the ‘60s, but as you might expect, a Black model at that time wasn’t as welcomed as you might hope. So, the documentary shows just how, despite the challenges put before her, Luna became a force in the fashion and modeling industry, but how she has largely been unknown by the general public.
‘Supermodel’ is directed by Nailah Jefferson, who is probably best known for her shorts, including the film, “Plaquemines.”
“Donyale Luna: Supermodel” debuts on HBO on September 13.
Here’s the synopsis:
DONYALE LUNA: SUPERMODEL chronicles the remarkable life and career of Donyale Luna, the first Black model to grace the cover of both Harper’s Bazaar (1965) and Vogue (1966). Breaking barriers in the fashion industry, challenging the prevailing ideals of beauty, and influencing culture in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Luna remains largely unknown despite her stunning body of work and her collaborations with some of the foremost fashion photographers of the 20th century.
