Catherine Hardwicke’s gothic reimagining of the of Little Red Riding Hood tale with “Girl With The Red Riding Hood” has found its male lead in relative unknown Shiloh Fernandez.
The actor reportedly beat out many contenders for the role of Peter, an orphaned woodcutter who becomes the romantic interest for Amanda Seyfried’s lead, a woman terrorized by a werewolf.
Fernandez had previously been on the cusp on earning a major role after testing but losing the titular role in the Wachowski Brothers’ “Speed Racer” and the role of Edward Cullen in the ‘Twilight’ franchise, with the latter most likely serving as his introduction to Hardwicke.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way shingle is producing the film for Warner Bros. and originally tapped David Leslie Johnson to scribe the story which has been described by Hardwicke as a “a wild, thrilling mystery in this great Gothic fairytale setting. It’s very sexy, romantic and scary.”
Production on the pic is set to begin this summer in Vancouver. Meanwhile, Hardwicke’s “If I Stay” with Dakota Fanning from a script by “Whip It!” scribe Shaun Cross and the Emile Hirsch-led modern musically-inclined adaptation of “Haml3t” both look to be on the backburner, if still in the works at all.
