‘Allswell In New York’ Trailer: ‘The Bear’s Liza Colon-Zayas, Elizabeth Rodriguez & More Star In A New York Sisterhood Tale

The Tribeca Film Festival is always worthwhile for character-driven humanist dramas that get lifted from well-known actors, and the new Latinx-centered family drama, “Allswell In New York,” which debuted at Tribeca last year, looks like it fits the bill.

Starring Elizabeth Rodriguez from “Orange Is the New Black” and “Logan,” “The Bear” breakout star Liza Colon-Zayas, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Felix Solis, Max Casella, Michael Rispoli, Shyrley Rodriguez, MacKenzie Lansing, J. Cameron Barnett, plus Bobby Cannavale, “Allswell In New York,” is the sophomore feature from director Ben Snyder, who follows up his acclaimed feature debut “11:55” from 2016 (he also directed episodes of HBO’s skate drama, “Betty”).

“Allswell In New York” centers on three Nuyorican sisters who navigate the daunting life challenges of single motherhood, career, and family, all while finding humor and solace within the bond of sisterhood. Moreover, the three leads of the film, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Liza Colon-Zayas, and Daphne Rubin-Vega, are credited with the film’s story and are producers of the film, so it sounds like a real labor of love (Snyder and Rodriguez wrote the final screenplay).

Here’s the synopsis from the Tribeca Film Festival this year.

Giddy with excitement at the prospect of finally becoming a mom, Brooklyn restaurateur Daisy (Elizabeth Rodriguez) eagerly welcomes her young surrogate into her home for the last few weeks of pregnancy, blinded to the huge risk she’s taking–and the secret the troubled young woman is hiding. Meanwhile, sister Ida (Liza Colon-Zayas), busy keeping others on the right track as a counselor at a local clinic, feels the emotional pull of their long-estranged brother, leading to a life-altering discovery. And sister-in-law Serene (Daphne Rubin-Vega), making a living as a vocal coach and reliving past glories, quickly realizes that her daughter is making money in a seriously dangerous manner, sending the former popstar into fight mode to save her only child from the kind of youthful mistakes that she once made.

Known for his work on “The Creator,” Oren Soffer is the film’s cinematographer. He was handpicked by superstar DP Greig Fraser when he had to leave that project early. Allswell In New York opens in theaters on October 18 and hits VOD on November 15. Watch the first trailer below.
