He has a commanding screen presence and voice that the character needs, and of course he has the physique. He also has a face that Snyder can age pretty easily if its an older Superman. As a longshot, I would also throw in Ben Hollingsworth from The Joneses.

If you're completely trying to separate yourself from the prior movies, why not explore one of the many other villains Superman has instead of rehashing the same one that most of America knows already and has known for nearly 30 years. A good one would be Brainiac or Darkseid.
