I think she means that the fact that he was drawn to the material perhaps says something about him. It is true that many filmmakers are drawn to certain themes or certain types of characters that recur in their movies. So I don't think it is a stretch to make comparisons - especially if we are to take the auteur theory into consideration.

That said, if a filmmaker puts a film out into the public the public has a right to trash it or praise it. Dolan seems to know this but he clearly doesn't seem to like it, which is fine. But he has to also know that every filmmaker gets trashed at some point - and sometimes for absurd reasons. Most just carry on. Heck, he won an award at Cannes for the film so why should be get upset about one review!

"Although apparently adapted from a play by Jean-Luc Lagarce, it’s simply impossible to believe that a story this stridently self-pitying could not refer, more or less explicitly to writer/director Dolan himself."
- Kiang

"I think Cannes might just have ruined Dolan forever. No chance he's going to rein it in now."
- Kiang

"@jessicakiang I'll be alright, Jess. As long as I ignore your cheap parallelism between a life you don't know and a play you've never read."
- Dolan

I'm pretty sure Dolan has a point. How was the film "apparently adapted" from the play? It either was or wasn't. She should probably concentrate on reviewing the film itself and stop attempting to draw superficial psychological comparisons between the fictional characters created by another writer, whose work she wouldn't have even heard of if not for the film, and Dolan.
