Critics are human beings too. It’s okay to say when you really rooted for something and it didn’t deliver. It’s okay to express admiration for a filmmaker and understand what they were going for, and yet disappoint.
A bad movie is one thing. A disappointing one hurts more. So, it’s not about him being apologetic. It’s about him truly saddened by the movie.

This is the tenth review I’ve read that calls DuVernay a brilliant director, even “visionary”. If she were male and white, she would be considered an inexperienced untalented hack and would never have been given this gig. Her slim resumé amounts to the plodding SELMA, which could have been an above-average TV movie but no more, and 13th, the kind of angry racist anti-white documentary that warms the icy hearts of Hollywood liberals.

When are black folks going to get tired of being condescended to like this, critics swooning over every movie with a black or female director like indulgent parents cooing over baby’s first steps. The sommersaults critics are doing to avoid blaming director DuVernay for this incoherent, unmagical mess are kind of hilarious. Sure, the movie’s not great, but the director is AMAZING.

Will we ever get back to a place where we can judge movies and works of art according to their merit rather than the race or gender of their creators?

It’s pretty clear why so many critics are being honest enough to say it’s not a “bad movie” or it “just misses” but has many “great qualities”, about “Wonder Woman” and “Wrinkle in Time” but sing all the praises surrounding how well meaning it is blah blah blah, but won’t torch these movies like if they had been made by goofballs like Zach Snyder, Tyler Perry and Michael Bay who have been making crap like this for ages.

And that is embarrassing. A bad movie is a bad movie, irrespective of the type of genitals between the legs of the director.
