There are those who prefer the highly carbonated original and there are those who choose “Empire” because they prefer operatic gravitas over the sparkle and fizz of the original.

Any sequel will serve one of those two audiences, but never both. The most the producer’s can hope is that the latest “Star Wars” episode is everyone’s choice for second best.
