The Thin Red Line the better of the two? Keep dreaming. Like all of Malick's films it's scenery porn with lousy grasp of character and narrative. It's a horribly fractured film with way too manycharacters that it can't manage or give any real attention to. Saving Private Ryan has gone on to influence every war film since and even made almost evey war film prior look like child's play. Saving Private Ryan had audiences on the edge of their seat, The Thin Red Line put hem to sleep.

And Black Hawk Down is Scott's best directed film? Are you joking?
