Of course people are going to side with Wes. He's a big proponent of music in movies and classic pop music that everyone loves, but it's only his first two films that can be called masterpieces of this idea.

Royal Tems was on the other night and well, let's just say with this movie going fwd, none of the music has been used subtly at all.

The next best use is the Satyajit Ray score pieces in Darjeeling.

BTW, this article is on Stereogum and has 47 comments right now, with most people siding with Anderson. The Gum loves a good feud.

It just infuriates me since I love the combination of music in film. And if I recall, I think this blog has a mission statement or something along those lines.

Personally I think Bonnie Prince is full of shit, but to each his own. He said it seems as though Anderson's (btw he didn't even know his name and he referred to as the "Darjeeling guy" making me wonder if he's even seen the masterpiece "Rushmore" and it's harmonious mixture of music and film) Ipod is on shuffle when it comes to songs in his movies, but what does he think a soundtrack is? Unless a song was written specifically for a movie, my guess is it's a pre-exsisting song that could possibly be on a director's Ipod, yes. One hears a song and thinks, "that will be good in a movie," and then puts it in a movie, and there's something wrong with that? I've heard Wes has most of his songs thought out before shooting for the most part, so Oldham's notion of him just dropping them in wherever is bullshit. And the same goes for Cameron Crowe. But it doesn't matter because as long as we have Sam Beam (who is a cinematographer by trade) and Bon Iver (who has recently said in interviews that he wants people to put his songs to film beacause thats how he envisions them) who needs Oldham?
