Pajiba has been quiet so far this year, but this evening they dropped the news that Will Ferrell, like fellow comedian Chris Rock, is looking across the ocean for cinematic inspiration.
Ferrell is developing a remake of the 2006 French romantic comedy, “I Do: How To Get Married And Stay Single.” Here’s the synopsis for the original film from the DVD:
Life is good for Luis. He’s happily single, enjoys his job and is loved, cherished and pampered by his mother and five sisters. But, one day, they decide it’s time for him to marry. By happy coincidence, Luis meets Emmanuelle, his best friend’s sister, who just arrived in Paris and is looking for a job. It seems like a win-win situation for both of them, but the best laid plans of single men can go horribly wrong!
The five sisters thing sort of reminds us of the seven sisters in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch Drunk Love” who needle Barry Egan endlessly, but overall, it sounds like a fairly standard romcom. Anyway, Alain Chabat, who stars in the original, is also on board and helping to develop the sequel for New Regency and WAM Films. On the whole, the concept sounds more in the territory of dialed down Ferrell mode not unlike “Stranger Than Fiction,” though we’re sure if need be, he’ll find a way to take out his testicles.
No writer is attached yet, but we would be surprised if Ferrell strays far from longtime collaborator Adam McKay. But here’s an idea for the remake: why not bring back Charlotte Gainsbourg, who starred in the original? That would be a charming little touch. As always, this project is in its early stages, so everyone currently attached could change by next week.
