Got a Tip?

Why Is ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Being Released In Summer Dumping Ground Season?

Something that’s been on our mind of late. Sure, we were excited about the news that Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” had scored an official 2009 release date (August 21, 2009)

But late August releases are normally a dumping ground where films are sent off to pasture, no?

Defamer is thinking the same thing. They call the release date location “eye-brow raising” and “traditionally, the place films like Bangkok Dangerous, College and God knows what else go to die before flourishing in the DVD/Flopz afterlife.”

That’s a dead-on assessment. So is this counter-programming on the Weinstein’s Company’s part hoping ‘Basterds’ will wipe out the non-existent competition and kids won’t be on a last hurrah vacation before they have to go back to school (presuming they sneak into the sure-to-be R-rated film)?

The Weinstien’s release date track record isn’t that great of late, Tarantino’s “Grindhouse” with Robert Rodriguez was released on Easter weekend and was mostly ignored at the box-0ffice, making for one of QT’s first commercial flops. Remember, TWC was banking on the “built-in” Tarantino audience for that one too.
