How tiresome. Gaspar Noe is a walking cliche. There\’s nothing "experimental" or avant garde about his films; he\’s simply a capitalist shock jock who exploits his "foreign art film" cache to produce adolescent pornographic and splatter films under the pretense of art. He\’s a Latino Eli Roth, but even less talented and more sleazy, if that\’s possible. I resent even a passing comparison between him and Lars Von Trier; this is like putting De Sica in the same echelon as Tom Green–give me a break. If Noe relocated to L.A., he\’d be just another unctuous adult film producer–he\’d be covered in red carpet and spitting flashbulbs, wearing cheesy sunglasses indoors, hiring escorts, brokering deals, and never registering even a tiny blip in the film industry. Actresses who work for him should be forced to wear dunce caps for life for their crimes against feminism. Nothing to see here, folks, move it along…

It needs to be asked; but is it really necessary in the telling of a feature film? Unlike Brown Bunny, it appears that some directors are taking a Paris Hilton approach to stir up buzz. Bertolucci attempted this with "Dreamers". And unlike Nymphomaniac, I find it underwhelming as part of a storyline. If I want porn, I can get plenty of \’artsy\’ porn on nummerous sites and save myself from seeing [or paying for] this drivel.

I find Shortbus to be the best film exploring/celebrating sexuality & the best part is, none of the homo/trans-phobias that Gaspar Noe seems to consistently express in his films. Gaspar is a hack without anything interesting to say.

@FAULKNER it\’s an odd, long, messy beast, so worth a second chance, though wouldn\’t be surprised if you come out feeling the same, or if one day I turn on it, but its tricky, mercurial nature deserves some respect when so much settles for prosaic. @P-DUB how could we forget In The Realm of the Senses? Been awhile so I\’ll hunt it out again but surely that film sets the standard.

In The Realm of the Senses is a pretty amazing movie about dark sexual ideas that tells the story almost exclusively through sex. And while I\’m not sure if the film used actual penetration (it comes incredibly close at the very least), it very well could have and been the same film.

Just wanted to throw that title out there as a comparison point.

I didn\’t hate the movie, I simply found it underwhelming. I didn\’t find the fly fishing comparison witty, nor the threesome bickering. However, I must have forgotten the Bach harmonies and female orgasm parallel. I really should rewatch it as maybe my initial opinion of the film was premature.

@FAULKNER U could be right about it having nothing to say about nymphomania, I mean he\’s allowed a metaphor, but juvenile? Nothing to say? Even just within the conversations we were taught the witty comparison between picking up and fly fishing, & the fraudulence within politically correct speech; then there\’s the politics around a threesome with two north Africans and feminine gestures made by heterosexual men, there\’s even a discussion on the relation of Bach\’s harmonies to the female orgasm. Not saying that you personally should find them interesting or like the film but one thing you can\’t dismiss the film as is empty and childish, I mean he gives you a hundred good reasons to hate it so why reach for the wrong ones?

Nymphomaniac really was a very juvenile movie with little to say about love, sex, or sexual politics. hell, i\’d venture to say it didn\’t even have anything original to say about nymphomania. here\’s hoping i find Love to be different even if it fails in execution.

No mention of Nymphomaniac or did I miss it? Nymphomaniac made me feel less horny, more never wanting to have sex again, but it\’s a film about nihilism and depression so I\’d give it kudos for creating sex scenes that actually deepen and work within the narrative, maybe that\’s where other film makers go wrong.
