I am a firm believer in being true to your material. If women will pitch blockbuster material, then time will eventually show they can succeed just like I know my material will suceed. Blockbusters seem to come alive strickly because the content is there. No matter who comes up with it. Creation is the driving force and time will win out for it\'s sake. I look forward to seeing women directing in any aspect just like I look forward to seeing my own name in lights. The gender of the director doesn\'t matter, only the content of the movie.

Dear Bored, In future you might find it useful to read the article first - just in case you end up posting utter jibberish.

Dear Jonathan, Whilst Kathryn Bigelow is a very accomplished action director - her US box office track record is horribly limp. Without gender bias, this has got to work against her in this context.

find it interesting that every time I read an article talking about sexism in the industry, the response from readers (who most likely work in the industry) is overwhelmingly sexist. I have worked as a camera operator, DP, production assistant, casting associate and director. I have see seen producers openly discriminate against employees on the basis of race, gender, age: all practices that under civil rights law are illegal. To ignore the problem or dismiss the idea that sexism exists because more boys read comic books than girls is pathetic. Cinema is about empathy and if a dude gets to direct Pride and Prejudice why in the world wouldn\'t a woman be capable to direct Spiderman? No people, it isn\'t lack of interest, lack of skill or lack of talent keeping women from directing action flicks, it\'s lack of opportunity. You CANNOT work in a studio film without getting hired. Yes, we make indies, we make docs but when it comes to studio films we cannot be self-made. We need a studio to back us and they refuse to do that. Diversity isn\'t rocket science. It\'s basic math. If you only interview 10 guys for a job how do you suppose a woman can get the job? Women don\'t get blockbusters because studio execs refuse to hire them. There. Enjoy your buble. It\'s the 21st century and i won\'t be long until it pops.

The study leaves out important information: what percentage of Sundance SUBMISSIONS were directed by women? Yes, women are underrepresented at the top, but they are also underrepresented at the bottom. And that is something women actually have control over. Pick up a camera. Make a film.

Two of the comments here suggest that female directors aren\'t interested in directing studio action films (for one reason or another).
My God... So sick of women claiming men dominate Hollywood. I\'m male and I\'m struggling, I didn\'t walk on in because I\'m male, do you hear me complaining. All these female activists have to comment on is \'results\' when the should be focusing on development. Are there as many women in the film industry as men and how long does this date back? Are women as persistent as men in the FI? Do women stay up late and agonise as much as men in the FI? Are there as many women in film schools as men in 2014/15 because that should balance out the Fi 10 years from now. Iwhat women fail to realise is that men are struggling to make it big too, so stop claiming sexism and acknowledge that simply put, believe it or not, you may not be good enough for the job this time around, just like I\'m not... But I\'m not complaining and pointing the finger, in writing and directing my own movie on a small budget, I may get laughed and boo\'d out the theatres but I won\'t let fear stop me, I may conquer the world and get noticed by Hollywood. So ladies, try the same for godsake.

This is pure presumption, obviously, but I would imagine studio heads worry that women won\'t be aggressive enough to make those big tentpole action movies. And the ones who clearly could, such as Katheryn Bigelow, generally have little interest in them. I mean, most of the best directors have little interest in these giant tentpole action films. Unless they have something else going for them. Kathryn Bigelow started out making smaller-scale action films. I don\'t see a lot of women pursuing those kinds of movies early in their career.

I attended a fantastic little film festival last year called Citizen Jane. This fest, largely sponsored by a women\'s college with a strong filmmaking degree (Stephens College), has as its central mission to celebrate female filmmakers. Anybody that reads this article and wants to be a part of the solution should check it out.

I wonder if any of this has to do with the perception that the material that blockbusters are made from (these days mainly comic books) is material that women have in the past been documented to be disinterested in (whether this is a true representation of their interests I cannot say).
