I agree with a number of the re-cast voters, but people need to realize that hindsight can taint just as much as it can clarify. Sure, ten years later, we’ve seen the acting power that can come out of Cate Blanchett, and “Surely,” people would say, “she deserved an award back then as well.” People have barely heard from Roberto Benigni since 1998, and yet well all recognize Edward Norton as one of his generations greatest actors, but no one really thought about this 2 years into his film career. I’m not ripping on the Playlist, and like I said, I agree with some of these, but a lot of people treat these retrospectives like the end all be all, when sometimes, decisions made in the moment are just as credible.
