Wow I didn't even need to read this whole article because after reading the first four lines I gathered you were obviously an idiot, whose facts are also completely and utterly wrong. First of all the story in the sequel was written extremely well, the expanding characters, the development of news ones and while focusing a lot on the relationship of Hiccup and Toothless never let it negate the other people that were central to the plot. You also mention the disappoint numbers that came in for HTTYD2 and yet if you do any research whatsoever you'll find that since September it has grossed over $600 million, while its budget was around $145 million. So how you got a financial 'loss' from this is beyond me. Either way if your blog had a little truth to it I'd maybe give you a little more respect rather than simply writing whatever garbage you seem to be creating in your head.

""Prince of Egypt," an epic retelling of the biblical story of Exodus. Because if it's one thing kids love, it's a animated epic (complete with forgettable Elton John songs) based on stories they probably slept through in Sunday school."

...uh...i think you confused PRINCE OF EGYPT with ROAD TO EL DORADO. Because I'm pretty sure PRINCE OF EGYPT had a pretty memorable song in there somewhere....with like..whitney houston and mariah carey...think it won some awards or something.

Great article, really enjoyed it. One gripe - I really, really enjoyed HTTYD 2. Took my two kids to see it and was moved by its heart and its stunning cinematography. Thought it might have been the best film (not just animated film) I've seen this year. Can't wait for the next sequel.

Reading this article made me realize that DreamWorks has made more memorable movies than pixar.
Interesting article. Wondered how you calculated that the Croods lost money though? It made $587m worldwide from a reported $135m budget. Even given the vagaries around who makes what % of box office receipts and marketing spend and all the rest, this surely seems like one that turned a profit?

Aardman are no longer at Sony, btw.

really how to train your dragon 2 is missing story? yet you find out about alphas hiccups mom hiccup becoming chief. there is alot more. its called story and character development since it is a fkn series and not just a single movie story progression is different. usually the first in a series gives the main plot and the second one gives characters more development and set things up for a huge next movie..

people these days are so impatient and have such a small attention span that if every movie/tv show doesnt completely explain everything in that movie/episode they think it sucks. even though 90% of the time a movie series explains more in the next movie they are only aloud to make a movie so long its not their fault. the first how to train your dragon was good but the second one was amazing and sets up for an amazing next movie with more developed characters than before

I love how the idiot who wrote this horrid article got all his fact wrong and still thinks he means something. This is all bogus information and I will say here and now that the reason HTTYD3 has been pushed back a year has nothing to do with anything mentioned on this article. The movies mentioned have each surpassed the estimated gross projected and will continue to do so. I can't go in to details over the matter but rest assure this article is false and the movies you have come to love will be here as soon as possible.

HTTYD 2 was a victim of just a horrible year at the box office, not due to writing or anything intrinsic. In fact, if anything, it has done very well.

If you look at Box Office Mojo you can see that on any given day, it is beating the daily numbers of movies like Transformers 4 and other, far newer, hits. They just had spectacular openings that have given them unassailable leads, but none have had the long legs of Dragon 2, and so Dragons is gaining ground. I firmly believe that if they keep it in the theaters much longer, it would eventually over take them domestically.

As for what the delay means, I think it is evidence that DreamWorks is thinking like the author of this article. They see it's 175 million domestic receipts (so far) as being somehow a disappointment as the original did around 225 domestically. That 50 million difference in domestic box office has them ignoring the fact that the original HTTYD only grossed 490 odd million total, and this is already over 600. When all is said and done, I see HTTYD 2 ending around 700, and that is by no means a "failure".

If you are going to mention Katzenberg rushing "Antz" to try to screw over Disney/Pixar, you should probably also mention Eisner at Disney who made the first moves, scheduling "A Bug's Life" to screw with "Prince of Egypt"'s originally announced release date, and also getting the Disney board to not pay Katzenberg a bunch of money they owed him.

So, basically, Eisner tries to screw Katzenburg, using Pixar's movie as a tool (and Pixar apparently did not really object to this). Katzenburg counter-screws with "Antz".

As far as the money goes, Katzenburg sued Disney. Disney agreed to settlement, and paid Katzenburg $240 million. That gives a pretty good idea of just how badly Eisner had tried to screw Katzenberg.

This makes me quite sad. I\'ve loved DreamWorks ever since I was a child, and to see it going it to disarray is quite upsetting, especially since I quite enjoyed HTTYD 2. I liked it much more than the original. They need to stop focusing on remaking the really old or overused movies, however, that\'s where they\'re losing profit. Madagascar has gone on long enough. Focus on the newer projects. Rise of the Guardians was met with a warm welcome. Hmm...

I also thought httyd 2 was a wonderful story I am curious do you have some particular animosity to dreamworks for some reason ya they have had a tough couple of years but so have almost all of the Movie companies out there I know Disney has had quite a few movies they have put out that are not exactly bringing in the big bucks. I think maybe you should try and take a step back and look at the big picture to coin a phrase "you cannot see the forest for the trees."

Interesting article, however the comment of saying HTTYD2 had disappointing numbers is false, as they did triple there profits out of both the film with number 2 making more of those profits, while this argument shows a great deal of credibility, it shows a great deal of almost anguish for dreamworks as being a solid if not better rival than Pixar, because of this and the severe enthralment of emotion in the article is does lack in validity, though the points made are valid, I can\'to bring myself to fully accept this as strong argument that dreaworks is on a downwards spiral and how most of there films are less than par.
