Pitt actually did do some covers to promote Basterds - Empire magazine in the UK (with an in character shot), a big interview in the London Times and, bizarrely, the cover of US Wired (complete with bluetooth headset). Whether any of these sold any film tickets is up for debate

Hey playlist, if you agree with Tristan then why'd you like the script so much? Was the 'demarcation' clearer on the page? You should all just accept the fact that Inglourious was fantastic and move on with your lives. QED.

Numbers aside, I have to admitt I was really disappointed with the Basterds. It has the best performances and cinematography of any Tarantino film, and the first chapter may be the best thing he's ever shot, but somehow it just dies by the middle point. Without any strong moral demarcation between the Jews and the Nazis, and virtually all the characters being kind've tangential and vague, there's just no drama or momentum at all.

Personally, I don't really give a hoot about box office numbers, but common sense says that they should wait until next week before celebrating. Tarantino and Pitt have the cults and screaming fans who will come out no matter what. It remains to be seen if anyone beyond that wants to come out for 2.5 hours of childish revenge fantasies.

A question to add: Is there a chance an Oscar nominated film soon to be out of theaters, like The Hurt Locker, to be re-released in the winter? Even after a fairly long theatrical run this summer? Maybe Summit would take some chances later in the year.

Is it concievable that it could be released again, giving it one of the oddest and longest runs (given its festival tours, release schedule, critical acclaim, etc) in theaters in the past few years? Even if it is a niche film?

The fact that Post Grad got 2,000 screens makes me wonder.

It's amazing how Pitt doesn't even have to promote his films and it's a lock they'll do at least pretty well worldwide, especially in recent years.
And he's still taken some risks, like The Assassination of Jesse James.

Also, if Public Enemies had the $100 million reported budget, could its marketing costs really have been an additional $80-90 million? That's enormous.
