Michael Fassbender is not a star. He\’s a very great actor and quickly gaining recognition, but he is not yet a star and you can\’t sell a movie on him.

You people don\’t seem to understand the \”Who?\” part of this article. It wasn\’t said writer calling out Fassbender, but acting as a voice for the casual movie going crowd that makes up a large majority of the audience..

Nobody but movie geeks know who Fassbender is. That is not calling him worthless garbage. Calm yourself. It just means that he can\’t sell a film and the general public has no impression of him. Maybe AFTER he becomes Bond he can sell a movie, but saying that \”someday he may become Bond\” doesn\’t sell squat in the here and now.

There are a few things to note about this X-Men.

1) Michael Fassbender is a star.

2) The era has been parodied beautifully by Austin Powers but doesn\’t work here dramatically.

3) Kevin Bacon was embarrassing.

For all the studio BS about X-Men performing to expectations or otherwise, it\’s worth bearing in mind the upside of what Fox is doing. By signing up a cast of relative unknowns – probably with options for forthcoming instalments – they leave the door open to doing a new series of films without someone like Hugh Jackman and co taking a heavy back-end position. So even if this first film is a disappointment relative to the previous four, it actually represents a much more secure financial footing for the series going forwards.

The fly in the ointment, one suspects, is that Matthew Vaughan\’s shoot had all the hallmarks of being a runaway production – which probably means a much bigger budget than the one they signed up for..

I didn\’t mean to imply there was anything greater than a 1% chance that Fox would let Disney ever have the X-Men franchise like that. Fox has done dumber things, but not that much dumber. That said, contractually, it remains a possibility.

@Gabe, good piece, but I don\’t know where you\’re going with this Disney stuff at all. Fox is never going to hand over their lucrative franchises to Disney. Disney COULD buy them back for a couple billion dollars like they did with the Marvel films and Paramount, but your piece SEEMS — i\’ll give you the benefit of the doubt — to suggest that if Fox doesn\’t know what to do with them or how to develop them, they\’ll just go, \”aww shucks, we can\’t figure em out,\” and hand the brands over which is of course absurd. I hope that\’s not what you\’re saying and if so, stop doing bong hits before writing up the B.O. report.

Look what Columbia did with Ghost Rider 2, they rushed it into production because rights were going to lapse. They\’d rather have a shitty film on screen and keep the brand going then roll over and just let rights lapse back to Marvel.

Same thing with D.C. and Superman. The second they got a half-decent pitch by Chris Nolan they basically green lit the Zack Snyder Superman film cause rights revert back soon.

Other things to note about First Class. Yes, you\’re pretty much dead on about its domestic take, but note, it made $64M overseas.

So when it comes to big/loud summer blockbusters, the two lousy sequels – Pirates, Hangover 2 – make a fortune and the two that were genuinely good – X-Men, Panda – struggle?
