Ron Hubbard, or Mary Sue Hubbard is not there. What is there is a shallow distortion of those subjects, done, I suspect, as a way to sell movie tickets. In that sense, I think Anderson is trading on the tremendous popularity of Scientology to garner attention for his movie. What a disservice to moviegoers, who will go to see the movie, hoping to learn something about Scientology when all they will get are distortions or outright untruths. How dishonest of the filmmaker! And then the gall to make public that has shown the film to Tom Cruise, one has to assume, for Tom's approval? (Tom had some issues with the film.)

While previously respecting Anderson for "There Will Be Blood," a fine movie, now, I've lost my respect for him as a person and as a filmmaker. He's not after the truth, and, in that sense, he's no better than William Randolph Hearst was as a journalist. Akira Kurosawa said, "To be an artist means never to avert one's eyes."
