Once hailed as “the next Spielberg,” the name M. Night Shyamalan is widely considered a punchline following a string of box office and critical failures. But that hasn’t stopped one of his earlier films “Unbreakable” from gaining a group of obsessive fans including Patton Oswalt.
Released the same year as Bryan Singer’s “X-Men,” Shyamalan’s Bruce Willis-starring take on the superhero myth had a much cooler response from the moviegoing public and critics than his previous “The Sixth Sense.” So Buena Vista Pictures put the kibosh on any sequel plans, despite Bruce Willis’s hopes for a trilogy.
Fifteen years later, the hopes for a David Dunn (Willis’ character) trilogy live on in Oswalt’s imagination. The “Big Fan” and “Ratatouille” actor stopped by Screen Junkies for their “Dream Sequels” segment to reveal what his ideal sequels for the 2000 film would be. Never mind what Shyamalan’s been tinkering with recently —the comedian not only knows what the sequels should be about (part two would cover Dunn creating his erstaz Justice League of similar-powered people and part three would see the return of Samuel L. Jackson’s Elijah Price as he tries to bring down Dunn) but also the titles. The second installment would be “Unbreakables” and the third would be “Broken.” It’s clear from the video that Oswalt is absolutely sincere in his appreciation of Shyamalan’s film, and we wonder if virality of this video might light the fire under the much-maligned director to work in earnest on what could be the only films anyone ever wants to see from Shyamalan ever again.
