Kubrick was savagely attuned to the world around him, pretty much everyone working in movies today is looking inward, working within a movie bubble that exists of in and of itself.

No. Almost all of Stanley Kubrick\’s movies may have been adapted from source novels but he personally wrote the films & adapted them to be 100% his vision. The movies were 100% from the mind of Kubrick.
David Fincher is great but aside from perhaps Zodiac his movies are all screenplays he liked & he\’s added the "David Fincher Filter" to it.
So the answer: No. David Fincher is NOT the next Stanley Kubrick.
But he is the FIRST David Fincher.

Fincher is a supreme craftsman but not an artist. When ZODIAC was released he seemed poised to become the great Hollywood filmmaker of his generation, but ever since then he\’s just drifted as a gun for hire from one project to the next, adding his sheen and polish to scripts that are mostly unworthy of his talents. He has no unifying vision, no worldview as such beyond a vague and ill-defined pessimism. I sometimes think that ZODIAC and BUTTON were the two movies that meant the most to him, and after their relative failures he\’s just rolled along with whatever scripts he can get green-lit.

I think he is more Alfred Hitchcock than Kubrick. The only thing he has in common with Kubrick is there need for many many takes.

None of them are Kubrick, Kubrick\’s dead, and while we\’re at it so is Marlon Brando, so please no more fobbing us off with another pseudo Brando. However we live in a shit storm of a world, if the money bags aren\’t, as I suspect they are, keeping the movie fortress on a Joe Mccarthy style leash, then we may see another Kubrick & Brando, god knows we need them.

To me, he is more like a Hitchcock: the same strong commercial taste and, at the same time, a very well define vision. PTA or Wes Anderson are more like Kubrick to me, because they had a very distinct way of storytelling and a very personal approach to their projects.

He\’s a real craftman, but lacks the "art" that Kubrick had. PTA (mentioned above) is the other way round, is artsy as Kubrick, but not as proficient and meticulous as either Kubrick or Fincher.

Comparing the two of them is a really superficial and insipid approach. Obviously Fincher has huge respect for Stanley Kubrick\’s body of work and it clearly shows in his films. I personally am fond of both, with a greater sensitivity for Kubrick films because I find them more challenging to understand and explore, but that is just my subjective opinion. Cheers.
