When you look at the best, scariest horror/monster movies, they involve locking your main character in a phonebooth with a rattlesnake. The more claustrophobic the environment, the better. The fewer places to run and hide, the better. This justifies the fight. The character, who would wisely and gladly run, can't, and as a consequence is forced to get
"up close and personal" with a monster. "Alien" is the quintessential example of this scenario, but you also find it in films as diverse as "The Exorcist," "Jaws," and even the subway tunnel sequence in "Cloverfield" (which I would argue is the only scary scene in that entire movie.)

A creature like "Godzilla" is about scale and grand scenes of destruction, which makes a great trailer, but not a great monster movie. It is virtually impossible to create a scenario where the main character is forced into a primal battle of survival with a creature that large. The "phonebooth" is the entire planet. It is either going to step on you, or not. You are either going to get out of the way, or not. So while on the surface, a "Godzilla" movie is a great marketing exercise and sounds like a fun ride in the abstract, when you get down to the core of what it is, it lacks the elements necessary to make a truly compelling, scary movie.

And unfortunately the trailer does nothing to dispel that notion.

Imagine you're stuck on a concrete island, awash in tidal waves and overrun with hysterical mobs of people trying to escape — meanwhile this giant Fing firebreathing unkillable monster is going 9/11 on the entire place. This trailer leads to me to believe there's definitely a way to make a Godzilla movie scary, which isn't something I would have previously thought possible.
