Also, his longtime partner, Amanda Abbington , is in this movie. Maybe they just wanted to act together again. There could be many different reasons why he accepted a less than stellar role. I am sure he doesn\’t need to worry so much about a paycheck since he is staring in both The Hobbit films.

Most Brit actors do the work for the sake of working; the industry is much smaller (ie pay is much lesser) but competition is fierce. Plus a bunch of them still persist with theater, including Martin Freeman, which pays like nothing per week.

Colin Firth did a whole bunch of crappy films like Main Street and St Trinian\’s before A Single Man. It\’s not like they are selling their image/celebrity with endorsements and reality shows.
