It might not be appropriate for this movie or, at this late date, fresh—-but it's astonishingly, awesomely, inaccurate to call it "generic." Just because you've heard something 4,000 times too many doesn't make it "generic." Jump back to 1981 and find anyhing else that sounded like it on pop radio. In fact, it'd be more accurate to call it "sui generis," although that would be incorrect as well, as it synthesized several previously extant musical and sociological styles/ideas.

The Sarah Silverman character seems like an awkward fit, but the trailer was more enticing than that other big trailer of the day. And I have no problem whatsoever with the inclusion of Once In A Lifetime.
