Got a Tip?

Watch: Full Indie Rock Doc ‘loudQUIETloud: A Film About The Pixies’

loudQUIETloud: A Film About the PixiesHey music fans, here’s a holiday treat for you. The Pixies formed in 1986 and split up just seven years later, parting on rocky terms. Eleven years later (in 2004), they reunited, and they’ve been touring and producing music since. In the years between, though, their music influenced some of the most iconic bands to emerge in the ’90s, including Nirvana, Weezer, and countless others.

In 2006, documentarians Matthew Galkin and Steven Cantor got behind the camera to explore the band’s reunion and get to the bottom of their split more than a decade earlier. The film, “loudQuietloud: A Film About the Pixies,” is now viewable in its entirety on YouTube courtesy of Noisey’s new Found Tapes show, which features rare, bizarre, and entertaining videos.

The 85-minute documentary opens with concert footage of the band playing “Where Is My Mind” (arguably one of their most recognizable songs, popularized after being featured in “Fight Club”), and gives a glimpse of where each band-member was in the beginning of the aughts. Some of their directions in life are a bit surprising. David Lovering “gave up the drums to pursue hobbies such as magic and metal detecting.” (Magic, like on stage, not the card game.)

It then tracks the whereabouts of Frank Black, Joey Santiago (who’d formed the band The Martinis with his wife), and Kim Deal (who was performing with her sister in their band, The Breeders, and has since left The Pixies, again). Interestingly, pretty much all of them seem to have needed the reunion. As Santiago claims, he had a growing family and was barely making a living, so he needed the income.

The doc is an intimate behind the scenes look, featuring not only the band members and their responses to performing again (those responses ranged from excitement to trepidation), but also their family members’ thoughts. Deal’s parents and sister all appear and are nothing but excited for the reunion.

Check out the full video below. And if you have the time, give a listen to the group’s fifth studio album, Indie Cindy, which was just released in April of this year.
