There\'s also Super 35 3-perf, which is 3 perforations high instead of the standard 4 perforations high for Super35. Super35 3-perf gives an aspect ratio or 1.78:1, and also saves film. At least the later episodes of The Wire were shot on Super35 3-perf as per one of the show\'s DPs, David Insley:

"These later episodes of the show are shot Super 35, 3-perf, and that saves a lot of money because that means we\'re shooting about three quarters of the film we used to. But we\'re only using the 4 x 3 part, so we\'re losing the edges of the 16x 9, but it\'s less than we were using when it was 4-perf, so (the image is) somewhere between a Super 16 image and a standard 35 (mm) image."

35mm Full Aperture is 1.33. In this show it appears they framed for 1.33 inside a 1.78 frame, protecting the sides in case this ever happened (a 1.78 HD version). There is still even more image on the top and bottom that we will never see, because its not what was composed for.

Open matte Super 35 is closer to 1.66:1, so I expected that the 16:9 transfer would open the image up on the sides. What is a nice surprise is that it sounds like they will try to preserve the composition of some of the shots where it is important to do so.

Wait wait wait, I\'m so confused now… They\'re not actually zooming in on the film negative and chopping off the top and bottom to fill a 16:9 screen, they\'re essentially UNDOING the cropping they did in the first place? Now I\'m wondering how it was shot - 35mm film negatives are always either 1.33 (Super 35) or 1.37:1, and I assumed we were watching the full camera negative when it originally aired... This changes a lot, then. It\'s still dicey, in that their intended framing is not being preserved, but this is much better than LOSING image by zooming in and cutting off parts of the frame.
