I remember reading about someone who hooked up a VCR and watched A New Hope while sitting in the line-up for Return of the Jedi in 1983. So, yeah, it was on VHS before that.

Star Wars was indeed released on video prior the the CBS network airing. It was first available as a "rental only" title, that retailers were selling for about $125, in about 1982. The official sellable version was released in early 1983 on VHS, Beta, laserdisc and CED video disc. I should know, I bought it

When this happened, my Mom sat me and my two older brothers down to tell us Star Wars would be on tv…and we were going to record it. I said, "Wait…what does this mean???" My older brother said, "It MEANS we can watch it whenever we want!!!!"
