I largely agree with previous commenters in that this video essay is confusing and misguided. Beyonce\'s film seems to be intended to empower and represent women of color, yet this video essay entirely focuses on the white, male influence (or in Rist\'s case, white female) that appears to run throughout the film and once again pushes to the margins the women directors of color whose influences are ever more clear! The allusions to Dash, Lemmon, and Gunn\'s films (all POC!) should not go unrecognized and it is a shame that Carvajal presents such a whitewashed video essay.

Just so i\'m clear. This film about black women, black femininity is influenced by all of these films metioned, but no one is mentioning Beyonce\'s short Julie Dash\'s "Daughter\'s Of The Dust", Kasi Lemmon\'s "Eve\'s Bayou" & Bill Gunn\'s "Ganja & Hess" Because that whole water sequence in Foward/Love Drought is all Daughters In The Dusk. Those trees shots are all Eve\'s Bayou. I can agree on the Hold Up influence, but the rest of this is a reach.

This may be premature and overstating some of these connections...Red curtain ≠ David Lynch. However, there was a definite Taxi Driver influence in the 6 Inch section, as well as references to Julie Dash\'s Daughters In The Dust during the Forward and Freedom sections.
