Michael Mann is an innovator of technical aspects of film-making. So why was i disappointed with PUBLIC ENEMIES when it first came out ? Not the digital film making aspect which does seem slightly anachronistic at first glance. It seems that with PUBLIC ENEMIES Mann was treading water, it\'s story offered no new aspects to the old adage that the criminal and police are just different sides of the same character. This theme is worked and re-worked in Mann\'s own films time and time again with better results- Watch HEAT or MANHUNTER. BLACKHAT isn\'t any better even though audiences have now caught up with with Mann\'s digital photography. In the end it\'s not the technique or tools that Mann uses that that feels underwhelming, but the stories he tells that are underwhelming and hollow.

"The truth is that while Mann hasn’t released a truly great film since “Collateral”
Personally, I think COLLATERAL is one of the few Mann films to diminish over repeat viewings, whereas VICE and BLACKHAT get better and better. PUBLIC ENEMIES is a masterpiece, standing alongside THIEF and HEAT as Mann\'s best.
