The difference between Roger Deakins and [almost] everybody else is that he understands exactly how a shot can enhance the story you're telling, and he trusts that implicitly. Many DPs will either shoot something because that's the way you're supposed to shoot it (wide, mid, over the shoulder); or they'll shoot it cause it looks pretty. Deakins understands that it's all in service of story, and then he makes it look interesting to those ends.
