I loved Interstellar in IMAX, I still love it on Blu-ray. The reviews when it came out were odd. A number of reviewers attacked it with such vitriol, it was like they felt threatened by it. Some of the reviewers were obviously very young, emotionally immature and incapable of coping with a film whose hero experiences such emotional tumult. Though few recognized the underlying allegorical elements (they were too busy complaining about the dialogue), this must also have been one of the causes of their unease. It\'s an interesting film that can combine significant literary elements and science - and it\'s rare. 2001 and Blade Runner are the predecessors that spring to mind. And both were widely panned by \'high-brow\' reviewers when they came out. Pauline Kael (once thought to be infallible) showed how little she understood about Blade Runner. Many of the films she championed have now largely been relegated to the scrapheap. Not Blade Runner. I think Nolan\'s attempt at combining two such seemingly disparate elements - literature and science - in one film perplexed reviewers. Reviewers are, let\'s face it, English majors. Not good at science. Or some reviewers were sorta good at science and whining about scientific accuracy till they were slapped down by Kip Thorne, Brian Cox, Neil DeGrasse Tyson and yes, Stephen Hawking himself. Interstellar is way too much to take in in one sitting. Not even 2 or 3 viewings makes it easier to grasp. But I have no doubt in 30 years Interstellar will be the film of the decade that is remembered and studied while all the \'Oscar baity\' movies have been long forgotten. Great analysis, guys. It\'s so nice to read - or listen - to a review that has not been written to score snark points on twitter.

This is pure nonsense. All of these essays are null and shallow and are presented in a way that makes them look like they are actually saying something deep and analytical when they really are making something obvious seem complex. This movie couldn\'t have been more obvious and this video is pathetic and laughable analysis making something that is already so on-the-nose appear deep and layered. Seriously, Indiewire needs to stop picking up whatever video essays they come across on the internet and post it here. It\'s coming across as very lazy and unprofessional. It\'d be okay if the staff of Indiewire were making these but just picking up any random video essay, (most of which are crap and pretentious), and posting them here really makes this website weak.

Too many people try to ascribe meaning to Conrad\'s novella. There has to be a conscious effort on the part of the filmmaker to sustain ideas from other works and to elaborate on their theme; the same way a classical composer might allude to a theme in another\'s composition and then use it as a motif in his own. But absent a motif, an allusion to another work is meta information that ultimately dissolves into meaninglessness when there is no sustained effort. Can you imagine Nabokov referencing Poe in "lolita" only once, and not building on the reference because it actually means something to the world of Humbert Humbert? Can you image David\'s "The Death of Marat" alluding to the arm of Michelangelo\'s "La Pieta" without elaborating on the allusion?

What "Interstellar" promises is the same kind of materialistic hope that "2001: A Space Odyssey" offers -- the idea of somehow evolving or transforming from our material selves and the reality we now experience, into a higher form of consciousness and into a new reality, or into creatures that occupy a higher dimensional field. Nevertheless, the suggestions of such a transformation is not new to the science fiction community - with Clarke\'s "Childhood\'s End" being one of the most compelling pieces of fiction to deal with loss for materialistic/spiritual gain. Other than Damon\'s character, the message, structure, theme, and presentation of "Interstellar" is a far cry from Conrad\'s "Heart of Darkness," which also sought to shed light on imperialist lust, and man\'s inhumanity to man.
