“Toni Erdmann”
Maren Ade‘s beloved three-hour German dramedy is nominated for Best Foreign Film, but is gaining recognition too as the source material behind the upcoming American remake, set to star the now un-retired Jack Nicholson and Kristin Wiig.
Where to watch: Now playing in limited release.
“Tanna”
Martin Butler & Bentley Dean‘s Best Foreign Film nominee takes audiences into the rainforest for a unique drama.
Where to watch: Hits DVD/Blu-Ray on March 7th. It’s also available to rent or buy on Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, PlayStation Store and Microsoft.
“Star Trek Beyond”
Justin Lin‘s surprising financial flop, in spite of warm praise and critical adoration, got a well-earned Best Make-Up and Hairstyling nomination before Sunday’s ceremony. At least it has that going for it.
Where to watch: It’s available on DVD/Blu-Ray, and you can buy or purchase it on iTunes, Google Play, PlayStation Store, Microsoft, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu and Fandango Now.
“Suicide Squad”
Perhaps the oddest Oscar nominee this year — behind two-time nominee “Passengers,” at least – Warner Bros.‘ widely-panned anti-superhero ensemble blockbuster piece earned a Best Make-Up and Hairstyling nomination, in the category that once recognized “Norbit” as well.
Where to watch: It’s available on DVD/Blu-Ray, and you can buy and rent it on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, PlayStation Store, Microsoft and Google Play as well. It’s also available to purchase on Fandango Now, but not to rent.
“Trolls”
DreamWorks Animation‘s second animated 2016 feature, behind last year’s underrated “Kung Fu Panda 3,” is the noted inspiration for Justin Timberlake‘s radio-friendly “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” which is nominated for Best Original Song.
Where to watch: It’s on DVD/Blu-Ray, as well as on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, Vudu, PlayStation Store and Microsoft.
“Hail, Caesar!”
The latest film from the Coen brothers is only nominated in one category — Best Production Design – but it still deserves recognition.
Where to watch: it’s available on DVD/Blu-Ray, or you can order it up on HBO Now, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, PlayStation Store, Microsoft and Fandango Now.
“Jim: The James Foley Story”
Brian Oakes‘ Best Documentary Feature nominee studies the late journalist, James Foley.
Where to watch: Available on HBO Now, and to rent and/or buy on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Google Play and Microsoft as well. You can also buy it on Vudu. It’s scheduled to land on DVD/Blu-Ray on July 5th.
“Sully”
Clint Eastwood‘s latest drama was once expected to make strong showing among the Oscar nominations, but it only ended up with one, for Best Sound Editing. How time certainly changes things — Eastwood and Tom Hanks are no longer slam dunk guarantees.
Where to watch: It’s currently on DVD/Blu-Ray, and it’s also available to rent and buy on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, PlayStation Store, Microsoft, Fandango Now and Google Play. It’s also available for purchase on Vudu.
“13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”
Michael Bay‘s real-life drama is nominated for Best Sound Mixing, a popular category for the divisive filmmaker.
Where to watch: It’s available on DVD/Blu-Ray, as well as on Amazon Prime, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu, Epix, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, PlayStation Store, Microsoft and Fandango Now.
“Doctor Strange”
Marvel‘s newest superhero blockbuster is a visual feast in ways the MCU productions often aren’t today. Trippy, loopy and jumpy, it’s an undeniable feast for the eyes, and its Best Visual Effects nomination is certainly understandable.
Where to watch: It hits DVD/Blu-Ray starting February 28th, but it’s now available on Amazon Prime, iTunes, Vudu and Fandango Now.
“The Jungle Book”
Director Jon Favreau‘s newest movie is a technical wonder that’s up for Best Visual Effects, and it’ll likely win there too.
Where to watch: It’s available on DVD/Blu-Ray, as well as on Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, Vudu, Microsoft and Fandango Now.
“The Lobster”
Yorgos Lanthimos‘ unconventional romance dramedy gave the director his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Where to watch: It’s currently available on DVD/Blu-Ray, and it’s on Amazon Prime, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, iTunes, Google Play, PlayStation Store, Microsoft and Fandango Now.
“20th Century Women”
Mike Mills‘ lovely, deeply beautiful tribute to his mother only scored one nomination — Best Original Screenplay — and that’s a damn shame.
Where to watch: Now paying in select theaters, before landing on DVD/Blu-Ray on March 28th.
