This is a bad video essay. The subject matter (flat look) is an interesting talking point, but the arguments used are really poor. The Playlist relaying this as "in-depth" really point to the lack of critical thinking and cinema expertise on their staff.

I like how Suicide Squad and the two Snyder films look distinctly different from each other. It gives all these films a different feel and doesn't have that TV feel that Marvel has (meaning, each film needs to look like the other).

I disagree with most of this essay. Color grading has been around since the dawn of photography - it's just been done photochemically instead of digitally. The essayist also confuses his own opinion of how a film 'should' look with somebody else's creative choice. Color grading, like a lot of art, cycles through fashion & styles over the years. It makes sense that Marvel would grade all their material to exist in the same grounded universe. The sample 'improvement' he lays over one scene would have been fully at home in a toy commercial circa 1996, but looks pretty lousy to even a semi-trained eye today. The whole video is a mostly uninformed opinion piece.

I'm just going by Imdb for Dr Strange; remember though that Inception, a major visual reference point for Doc, was shot entirely on 35 or 65mm, so anything is possible.

From what I can gather, the video editor meant Iron Man 1 & 2 and Thor 1 were the only Marvel movies shot exclusively on film. But yes, there were some scenes shot on film in Captain America: The First Avenger, and there were some scenes (or, at least, shots) created digitally.

I'd have to look into Doctor Strange and The Avengers. I can see the latter being true, but I have some trouble believing anything in the former was on celluloid. Then again, you seem more on top of this than I am. I'll give it a look. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to the video editor.

The impression I was given is that the majority was shot on film with supplementary scenes (effects heavy stuff?) shot on the Alexa and tight action scenes shot on the Canon 5D.

It actually says that? It's possible some scenes were shot on film but I sure as hell don't remember that.

You're referring to Captain America? So I guess both Imdb and the Kodak website are wrong in saying that they used Kodak Vision 2 film stocks with Arriflex 35mm cameras? Alrighty then.
