This film looks just as interesting to me as his role in "Spring Breakers". The whole gangster pandemonium. James has done both dramatic and comedic work in projects and has appeared in an eclectic range of films. He also holds multiple degrees and is highly intelligent. Franco has a way with the various roles he engages in whatever it may be folks he sure is great at his roles and takes each project very seriously and plays them out like a perfectionist lol!! James Franco being "one of the best actors of his generation" an avid A-Lister who has a vision and carries out his craft in such fashion that other A-Listers fail to do which stands him out from the other successful actors in Hollywood. He's one of the most talented directors an admirable man who has accomplished an indefinite amount of projects I see an Oscar headed toward his direction soon!!

I would tend to agree that the Gangster/Organized Crime genre seems to be going the way of the Western, basically headed towards extinction in some ways, and considering Scorsese isn't going to live forever and Coppola is now retired, fans of the genre find themselves searching for the next big director to produce a film that could match the quality of the Godfather or Goodfellas. Having seen this year's entries into mainstream including the Iceman, Killing Them Softly and Lawless (if you can consider the last two part of the same genre). I find myself a little disappointed, none of them are bad by any means, Killing them Softly interestingly adds the political overtones whilst Lawless is a solid throwback to the bootlegging days with an excellent performance from Tom Hardy but The Iceman is a little too familiar in its execution and storyline and unfortunatley, none of them come that close to being great films.

"But one struggles to think of a standout film in the genre since Scorsese's Oscar winner"...ahem, KILLING THEM SOFTLY.

you think 'pulp fiction' is in the same genre as 'goodfellas' and 'the godfather'? and, your writing. really, just look at your sentences: ...for a film that clearly fancies itself as a character study, it never really scratches the surface of its protagonist." and i'm supposed to care about your review? the playlist is, by and large, a joke.
