Its too bad. Venice to be has always been the most respectable of the the three major festivals in my eyes. Not really burdened with quite the same media mess of Cannes. Looking at this year's line up there is a great group of really interesting filmmakers. Toronto is a great festival, but there remains a major focus on English language cinema. If what Jonas commented is true, that is unfortunate.

Venice is probably the most expensive festival at which to premiere anything. While the Hotel Des Bains was still operational, you were looking at a non-refundable ten night minimum payment of €10,000 for a room (imagine the cumulative cost of hosting a press junket to all involved). Between the rise of Toronto (far better organised and with solid industry support and a significant market) and the tribulations of local distribution in Italy (for whom the festival does represent a launching pad for releases), the future doesn't look too rosey for the festival at the moment..
