You can look at the ‘LEGO’ film franchise one of two ways — either it’s an IP that’s on the decline after less-than-stellar box office results for its ‘Ninjago’ and ‘LEGO Movie 2’ films, or it’s one of the few franchises that still is able to attract children and adults and has unlimited possibilities. If you’re Universal, apparently the focus is on the latter argument.
According to THR, it would appear that LEGO is in talks with Universal about possibly selling the rights to future films to the studio, after the partnership with Warner Bros. ended earlier this fall. The report claims that if the deal is finalized, future films would be released under the Universal banner, which would be a huge addition to the studio, as everyone races to get their hands on whatever IP is available.

Of course, any deal with Universal would be for films that don’t include characters that were in “The LEGO Movie” and its ‘Batman’ spin-off. Those would likely remain property of WB, which makes sense when you consider that both films heavily featured characters that are owned by that studio.
But much like the toys themselves, Universal probably sees a future where ‘LEGO’ films can be just about anything. Perhaps we’re in store for a ‘LEGO Fast & Furious?’ Okay, probably not. But probably some integration with the dinosaurs and characters from the “Jurassic World” franchise, right?

Other than those obvious crossovers, there’s really no limit to what Universal can do with the franchise. We’ll just have to wait and see how long it takes before the studio decides to cash in on its potential new IP. Something tells us that it won’t be long at all.
