Yeah, end what may the most harrowing thing I've ever seen with a bunch of bullshit twists and turns and perfect bow wrapped around each and every character. I don't know about you, but I needed a breather after the prior 7 and 3/4 hours. In fact, I relished it.

he develops such a personal attachment to his characters that he gives them a grossly sentimental final episode that devotes a third of it's running time to hanging out in the hospital, talking about stuff while they recover.

imagine if David Fincher had ended Se7en with twenty minutes of boring hospital banter rather than actually wrapping up the loose threads of the plot that went nowhere.
