Christa, thanks for your comments. I have been reading reviews and tweets, and there has been a strongly positive response from female reviewers and the women tweeting after they have seen the movie--totally opposite this writer. I also feel like I am seeing a lack of POV in the reviews written by men re this movie. Agree with your comments re HBO also.

I couldn't disagree more with this review. I also attended the TriBeCa premiere last night and LOVED it, as did the audience who was uproarious. The movie was hilarious, emotionally rewarding and an extremely important film for women. In an age where women always struggle to get the guy in the end, finally a self empowering film about finding yourself. Unlike big romcoms like Sex and the City, this film captured the authenticity of what it's really like to be a single woman approaching 30, and the boundaries one crosses when in crisis. The comment about "Girls" doing it better is a ridiculous correlation a) because it's TV and they have 11 hours to unpack a character and b) it's a superficially, "risky" show (as many are claiming) with the amount of gratuituous sex it portrays with much substance underneat. The show lacks any kind of strong character development, which Lola executes excellently in the witty and moving screenplay. The film is a much more nuanced portrayal of women in New York and unfortunately this reviewer is just another ignorant man who doesn't get the subtlety.
