I finally had a chance to see this film. Very dense and funny in spots. Maddin's fascination with ghosts is amusing, whether they be a phantom hockey team, paranormal hidden rivers, or pagan seances in city council. The concept of melodramatically attempting to escape a first-world city reminded me a bit of the Franks' attempted escape from Helsinki in Kaurismäki's "Calamari Union".

One of the funniest parts of my viewing experience, though, had to be listening to the post-film comments of a group of four seniors sitting a couple rows in front of me. They were Winnipeg natives trying to separate the fact from the fiction presented. In that regard I was glad that I didn't have a frame of reference and was able to enjoy it on a purely textural level.
