The opening line of your review just shows you didn't get this movie. Pretty sure the triviality of that first scene was exactly the point, only to be beautifully paid off later in the movie when we've returned to that scene in full context.

I found Adult World to be beautifully layered. The comedy is sharp and quick, yet never played for the obvious joke. And, for a movie that appears on the surface to have been inspired by some of the thinking person's romantic comedies of the 80's, it presents some very thoughtful truths about the differences between art and the hunger for self-expression.

I couldn't recommend Adult World more. A cult film in the making, don't be surprised to see it in many 'favorite films' lists as the year goes on.

Right on the money, Gabe.
Having a published novel of the same name with similar themes out for a year now (all the while trying to develop it as a film project) I was particularly interested in whether this film would be good. (I hoped it would … can only help my book sales.) But it wasn't, sadly. A lot of missed potential …
