Everyone has had their opinion on who should take over Jon Stewart‘s chair when he departs "The Daily Show" later this year. Samantha Bee has been a favorite, so too has Jessica Williams (who took herself out of the running), while Larry Wilmore has been given his own stint on Comedy Central with "The Nightly Show." But the next face on "The Daily Show" won’t be a longtime alum, but someone new, so get ready for the Twitter debates to follow.
New correspondent Trevor Noah has been given the reins to "The Daily Show." With only three appearances under his belt, the thirty-one year old South African comedian has some very, very big shoes to fill, but one could argue that being relatively unknown will be an asset. It will allow him the chance to find his voice, where more established "The Daily Show" veterans have already carved out an expected comedic tone, and that will also the allow the network and new host more room to course-correct if things aren’t working. The flipside is that everyone will have to work extra hard to retain the massive following Stewart attained.
“We talked to women. We talked to men. We found in Trevor the best person for the job.” Comedy Central President Michele Ganeless told The New York Times. “You don’t hope to find the next Jon Stewart – there is no next Jon Stewart. So, our goal was to find someone who brings something really exciting and new and different.”
