In the scrum of the Sundance Film Festival, it can sometimes be hard to get noticed, but the low-budget “The Greasy Strangler” certainly raised a few eyebrows in Park City. Our own review called it “disgusting, deviant, and pleasurably weird,” but others couldn’t get past the vibe of the wholly unique picture. But credit to FilmRise to snapping up the rights and taking a chance on the movie.

Executive-produced by Ben Wheatley — who is no stranger to divisive movies himself — and starring Michael St. Michaels, Sky Elobar, Elizabeth De Razzo, Gil Gex, Jesse Keen, and Joe David Walters, the movie from Jim Hosking tells the story of a father and son who battle over the affections of a woman — but that hardly even describes what you’re getting into with “The Greasy Strangler.” Here’s the official synopsis:
This Los Angeles-set tale follows Ronnie, a man who runs a disco walking tour along with his browbeaten son, Brayden. When a sexy, alluring woman named Janet comes to take the tour, it begins a competition between father and son for her attentions. It also brings about the appearance of an oily, slimy, inhuman maniac who stalks the streets at night and strangles the innocent—soon dubbed “the Greasy Strangler.” Flush your expectations down the toilet, because you have never seen a slasher film or a father-son comedy like this before.
Scored by Andrew Hung of Fuck Buttons, “The Greasy Strangler” opens on October 7th.
