This film is nowhere near a profit worldwide. $125m production budget, and that's not counting marketing and distribution (which will be high due to the fact it opened widely across the world). It has to get to around $375m just to break even. Although it might have performed better internationally, studios dont get as much of the box office from overseas. In China for example, they only get 25% as opposed to the average 50% they get domestically. Universal will be taking a bath on this one, and so will Tom Cruise's ego.

I’ll admit it, I’m a fan of Tom Cruise. Love the Mission Impossible series, enjoyed both Jack Reacher films (even though, as a fan of the books I initially complained about the height issue) and adored Edge Of Tomorrow. Wasn’t keen on The Mummy though. He was woefully miscast and way too old for the part. We went to see it expecting a daft popcorn romp, nothing more but even then we were expecting too much. I liked it slightly more than War Of The Worlds (which I hate) which isn’t a ringing endorsement.

The majority of criticism stems from a sort “gestalt” hate of Tom Cruise, by critics and (some) movie-goers alike. Fact is, the movie is actually a fun, no-brainer, popcorn flick that’s no better (not a whole better, anyway) than “Guardians Vol.2” and certainly no worse. If Tom Cruise was part of the force behind the “possessed” Nick Morton idea, good for him: it’s one of the differences (from the Brendan Fraser remakes) that make this new “reboot” interesting. The only drawback — whether it was due to Cruise’s influence, or just a failure on the writers’s parts, I don’t know — is that the ending of the movie doesn’t take a turn for the really dark (which it could have, considering a scene with the leading lady, and the “possession” aspect). THAT would have made “The Mummy” (2017) a four and half or even five star popcorn/action flick. (Tom Cruise has done something like that before: check out “Interview With the Vampire”). As it is, “The Mummy” is a three and half star, bordering on four star, action flick. Not great — but nowhere near as bad as film critics and bandwagon cinema fan-boys would have everyone believe (even the Russel Crowe-dark forces organization aspect, borrowed from lots of other movies and graphic novels that came before, works well enough).

This is one of those movies that’s suffering from bandwagon hate. First of all this is one of those movies that is not made for critics and “experts” are acting like nobody in America went to see it. I saw it last night on a weeknight and the theater had a pretty decent attendance, the movie is doing well.

Even though this is not Tom Cruise’s best movie, the people in the theater did seem to like it for the most part. This movie is not the disaster a lot of people are making it out to be.

Anything starring Tom Cruise becomes a Tom Cruise project, meaning he has more control over it than anyone else!

I became aware of this after “Jack Reacher”, based on books Cruise had no prior connection to & written (or so the credits claimed) largely by McQuarrie who did (it seems) far better work with “Usual

Suspects” years before he was connected to Cruise, who partnered with him to use Robert Duvall hardly at all (rhyme unintentional).

This reads like a typical anti Cruise person their is no evidence to back any of this up.

Universal do not let people do as is claimed in this article if anything they are the ones that end up messing with editing and story to meet what they want.

Cruise is getting a bad rap here. The movie isn’t a classic and starts to lose momentum once the mummy is captured, but it’s not as bad as this article and critics are claiming. For all the spin on Cruise’s role, the writer of the article doesn’t reveal anything about him that undermines the film in any way. I don’t see how giving the mummy more screen time would have helped the story. And if Universal wasn’t sure about Kurtzman being called in by Cruise, you can’t tell from all the effort they have put into hyping it as their first entry into the Dark Universe series. To be honest, making this part of a larger universe seems like a smart move when you look at what other film series are striving for, not to mention how the original Universal monster films all started tying together.

Why ? Why are there thousands of riders who jump right on the hate train anytime anything happens ?
Any company, whether it be movie or otherwise is filled with hundreds of folks who just try to do a good job and hope it leads to more work. And usually – they work ridiculous hours because they LOVE what they do. WHY would anyone want to see these folks fail ?
Granted the minute I saw the 1st mention of Universal /The Mummy / Tom Cruise / The Mummy is now a gender-reversed POWERFUL woman – you could just smell it. But WISH it to be bad WHY ?

My brother and I are huge movie buffs and as soon as I saw that Tom Cruise got the lead in The Mummy reboot I was worried and talked to my brother about it, we were in agreement. It’s unrealistic now (sad) but I would pay triple to get Brendan Fraser back, I love that guy, his ex-wife metaphorically raped him with alimony payments and he had to take every job that was offered to him and that mostly consisted of Video-On-Demand-esque shite.

Shame..
